Mother Names Twins “Alma the Younger” and “Alma the Elder” After Favorite Book of Mormon Prophets3/30/2017
By Cory Bickmore
DRIGGS, Idaho — When Quenby Williams, 24, discovered she was pregnant for the first time, her heart sang. But when the ultrasound revealed twin boys, she wept, because another dream was about to come true.
She would name the identical twins after her two favorite Book of Mormon prophets—in order.
Thus in the waning moments of February 29, Quenby and husband Doug greeted for the first time baby Alma the Younger, and seven minutes later, little brother Alma the Elder. “Alma the Younger is my all-time favorite dead prophet,” she says. “His dad, Alma the Elder, is my second favorite. Cool, but not quite as cool. So when heaven gave us this chance, I decided to go for it.” “I realized I could kill four birds with one stone. Or two stones. Like Ammon, or David from the Old Testament. What, they didn’t kill birds?” When asked whether the couple had considered naming the boys something more distinctive, Quenby says, “Why? What are you implying? That this wasn’t inspiration? I knew right away what THE name was, and what the other THE name was. How dare you!” With similar names and identical genes, many wonder how the two tell their twins apart. “A mother knows,” Quenby coos. “Alma the Elder is younger, and Younger is older. That makes the elder Alma the Younger, and the younger, Alma the Elder, not the older. Easy.” “And Doug helped with that, too. He got to pick their middle names after my third and fourth favorite prophets, ‘Samuel’ and ‘Samuel the Lamanite’.” The twins’ mother expects them to grow up well-adjusted, saying they will become the best of friends. “I can’t see anything coming between them. I just know Alma the Younger will set a righteous example for Alma the Elder, and to any brothers and sisters that come along.” When asked if they had considered a name for their next child, Quenby lights up and says, “Oh, yes. Elisha Elijah Melchizedek!”
